How Comedians Figured Out the Trick to Covering Trump [VIDEO]

For a while now, I’ve been saying that comedians are doing a vastly better job of covering the Trump-thing than traditional journalists, and here’s a good video from Vox that shows why: because comedians have no tolerance for bullshit.

While major news networks have struggled to figure out the right way to cover the Trump administration, political satirists like Samantha Bee, John Oliver, Stephen Colbert, and Seth Meyers have demonstrated why comedy can be such a powerful antidote to bullshit.

The first few months of the Trump administration have been a goldmine for late-night comedians and political satirists. Shows like Full Frontal With Samantha Bee, Saturday Night Live, and Late Night With Seth Meyers have enjoyed ratings boosts thanks to their regular lampooning of the Trump White House.

But beyond the jokes and sight gags, political satirists have done an excellent job of seriously covering the Trump administration — sometimes even better than major TV news networks. And that’s because while traditional journalists feel compelled to take President Trump’s often absurd statements and conspiracy theories seriously, political satirists have demonstrated an extremely low tolerance for bullshit.

Seems like all lip service. He already had to register as a democrat to run in the democratic primary last time and claiming he will run and serve as a democrat is all well and good, but if he won the nomination democrat would mean what he chooses for it to mean. Also if he won the presidency and decided to leave the party for some crazy reason It’s not like they could strip the presidency from him.

You’d have to be a massive asshole to declare you are a Democrat, use the party for money and organization say you agree to those rules and then declare you are an independent anyway.

What a way to start a presidency. Make sure you piss off everyone in the party you need to work with for legislation, etc. I don’t see any Republican coming to help him as an independent. They would use it to attack him and the Democrats.

Yep, I had a big one that had a hole on one end and a cap opener on the other, standard fare for a bartender. Also doubles as a weapon if necessary, those things are big.

Texas had those laws up until last year. The state finally realized it didn’t make much sense to say you could defend yourself, but only with a gun. The laws existed so that cops could target minorities, who were more likely to be carrying a stick than a gun.

Single-finger brass knuckle?
I can’t convince myself that isn’t a ticket to a broken finger because of the narrow support - I have regular style brass knuckles and the bit that gets pressed against the palm is almost as wide as the business end, so no finger is going to get metal smacked against it.
I can’t picture this one not getting pushed back too far and getting smashed against the finger bone.
I wouldn’t buy it at 1/100th the price.

Classic entrapment for a person with a cane. “Why do you have that?” If you say bad knee no problem, say bad neighborhood and it’s a wobbler felony. Nothing can be carried as a non permitted self defense tool outside of pepper spray, civilian version a piddling 1/10th strength of what cops use. I think I was required to keep those martial arts weapons in the trunk. Kali sticks, Bo ken staff etc. Maybe just wise to.

I think it will be a governor or someone out of Washington. When they have a fresh slate, they tend to prefer people out of Washington.

That’s why I threw in Bush, Ducey, and Reynolds. There’s also the “next in line” element, and I’m not quite sure who that would be. Watch for Republican winners in governors’ races in 2020, would be my best guess. I’d say in 2018 as well, but their only pick up was Alaska, and I think going from the only state that practices petrol-socialism to the presidency is going to be tough.

I don’t suggest they do anything I have no problem with someone joining the party just to run. We have a 2 party system largely perpetuated by rules put in place by those 2 parties so if someone wants to acknowledge reality and “use” a party for their run, it is up to the voters to decide how they feel about that.

But if the party really wanted to discourage it they could put a rule in place saying you can only run as Democrat if you have been a registered democrat for a certain amount of time, 6 months … a year.

The only reason Doug Ducey gets anything done is because the Arizona legislature has an (R) majority. And these (Rs) are nucking futs. They elected Kelli Ward as the head of the Arizona GOP on Saturday. Ward is the same woman who popped up and told John McCain to resign his seat after his cancer diagnosis so Ducey could appoint her, Kelli Ward.

Ducey’s Achilles heel is the schools. He’s got problems in multiple directions. The public schools are underfunded, the teachers carried out a successful and well-supported strike last year, and charter school financing is a sewer. Ducey is all in on charter schools and indeed also wanted to expand vouchers and promoted an initiative that would have done just that, which was soundly voted down.

The charter school financing scandal in Arizona is such low-hanging fruit I am very tempted to take it up. It’s basically legalized looting. For example, one charter school owner, State Sen. Eddie Farnsworth (who once told me “fuck you” in an email, bad Eddie), sold the “Ben Franklin schools” to a non-profit, one that he still has control over, for a cool $13.9 million. It was approved by the charter board last year. That’s just one example. I’m actually tempted to take up a subscription to the local fishwrap to support the journalist who has done the legwork on all this, too.

I can already see the ads now, “Doug Ducey let powerful interests walk off with $100 million in tax dollars for their charter schools—and that money went straight into their pockets.” Because it’s basically true. Charter schools don’t have to follow the same conflict of interest rules as the public schools and the owners can pay/loot what they want from the schools. And there’s NO evidence that charter schools do a better job of educating the children. /sorry not sorry for rant.

I mentored a female employee who eventually retired as a GM-14. All the mentoring took place on the job, 9-5. When we travelled together I put her in the better hotel. That might seem silly to you, but you don’t know the reality of the Army civil service. I saw what happened to senior military and civilians who were too cool for the Pence Rule.

I had forgotten Boulware’s name. He was the VP at GE when I worked on the Appliance Park refrigerator line. His collective bargaining approach was called “Boulwarism”. In short it meant GE would make one offer, and it would not be raised without a crippling strike. We broke him n a 101-day strike from Thanksgiving 1971—Feb 72 (dates approximate). It was the first time he was made to back down, but we never made up the lost pay. We did learn to strike in better weather.

I used Intuit before because my wife worked in an ambiguous way for a Japanese online company and it seemed like we had to use the Business version to make sure we weren’t penalized in any way. But now our taxes are far simpler. She works for an American elder care company. I do what I do and it’s not lucrative nor complicated. I’d prefer not to pay Intuit just to autofill from last year. Is there a preferred and easy and—-most importantly free or near-free—online source for those of us who have relatively simple tax forms? I know how dumb I sound, but is this a service IRS provides? We don’t own property and we don’t have any capital gains or loses…..

She authored one of the most popular New Age religious books of all time, A Course In Miracles, of which my ex-wife was a devotee. I’m talking early 90s crystals, channeling, Edgar Cayce, Y2K is the coming eco-apocalypse that will lead to the Age of Aquarius, pseudo-Bible study group book clubs type. The book was available in a dozen versions including leather bound, etc. Crazy times, the Nineties. She’s gone a long way to rehab her brand as an Oprah or Chopra type, I suppose. Oh my. Sounds like you can just download the forms and instructions from the IRS website and do them yourselves.

Meanwhile, anyone who thinks Whitaker knows the timeline for when Mueller’s going to finish his investigation isn’t paying attention. We heard Rudy claim it was going to be over last year. Whitaker is a Trump toady and is likely trying to get a similar short timeline.

But the GOP actually may want a fast release, because it would give them a chance to pivot away from Trump to someone else just as fast as they gave a statement indicating that they were going to back Trump and prevent him from being primaried.

They want it both ways. That’s one of the things the GOP is counting on the media to cover for them.

On Firefox at least, you will see a little shield icon in the left of the address bar. Click on that and disable something called “tracking control”. Took me a while to figure this out….

I have to correct this here. Williamson wrote A Return To Love, which is an interpretation of A Course In Miracles. So, no, she didn’t write ACIM, that was Helen Schucman as scribe, but she sold a kajillion copies of A Return To Love at the beginning of the Clinton administration.

But otherwise, it’s completely wootastic.

I remember when I had to catch a connecting flight in DFW. As I was walking through an area filled with the typical airport shops, I see one that stands out for all the wrong reasons - “The Fox News Store.”

Seriously.

A store devoted to selling nothing but Fox-related crap. Was that ever a culture shock for a poor unsuspecting Canadian traveler like me o_O

Might not have been as much there as it looked like.

Hudson News, which runs most of the airport newsstand concessions in the US, licenses a bunch of different brands to sign its newsstands with. I’m a frequent airport customer, and the sign is as likely to be “CNBC News” or “CNN News” or even, in Atlanta, “Daily World News” (the local black paper).

The sign doesn’t actually matter… inside it’s always the same racks of magazines and candy and six dollar bottles of water.

Trump has some attributes of Gollum, like the weird incoherent speech patterns. But he’s not really an equivalent to the Gollum character in the novels, because he’s a master con man and Gollum is definitely not. That’s why I see Trump as more like Wormtongue, leading America into darkness, at the command of others, by exploiting weakness.

Insurance is a fscking crapshoot. I was notified last week that one of my prescriptions had been filled and could I come pick it up? I couldn’t, as I was back East. And, oh, yeah, that will run you $172.

The evil too big to fail bank had changed pharmaceutical management companies at the end of the year, so I knew this was going to happen, but $172 for a generic? A generic that I can get a 90 day supply at Mall*Wart for $24? I mean, seriously, what a serious rip-off.

I would write a letter to my congressman and complain, but my congressman is Andy Biggs, who only cares about businesses and conservative churches. His constituents? Not so much.* He’s one of the seven asshats who voted not to pay the furloughed government employees. Obviously, he would be completely useless in this.

My insurance card did bring it down to $13.11, but it’s all a crapshoot. I expect to have another annoyance in about six weeks, when I need a refill on a very expensive, not yet generic, injectable protein. The new pharma management company won’t pay for Victoza but wants me on Byetta. My doctor said, “We’ll see about that” when I told him. I am not looking forward to this.

*He posted he was going to have a ‘telephone town hall’ tomorrow on his FB and I let him know that I wasn’t going to call in for a one-hour Andy Biggs promotional session.
